Why do documents need to be notarized?

Certain documents must be notarized in order to have legal effect. Given the inherent formal and corresponding significance of legal documents that must be notarized, state governments have deemed it necessary to enlist a trained individual to assist with their execution. A notary public, following his or her official appointment, performs as a public official in Pennsylvania to attest to the proper execution of important documents.

Be Prepared for Your Notary Visit
  • Please have a current, valid, government-issued photo ID with you for your appointment for notary services.

  • The person signing must be able to speak and communicate in the English language. A translator can not be used.

  • Some documents may require witnesses in addition to the notarization. Please read your document carefully to determine if witnesses are necessary and, if so, the number of witnesses required. You will be responsible to have your witnesses available at the time of the signing. Witnesses can not sign at a time other than your signature. If witnesses are required and you have not provided a witnesses, a $50 cancellation fee will be charged and you can reschedule for another time.

A notary public is not a attorney licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A Notary Public is not allowed to draft legal records, give advice on legal matters, assist in the completion of documents, including immigration, or charge a fee for those activities.
